Among J.S. Bach’s approximately 200 church cantatas are a number that call for solo voices only rather than the customary combination of vocal soloists and chorus. This concert features four such cantatas, each one spotlighting a solo voice .

BWV 51 (Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen) is for soprano and a brilliant solo trumpet; BWV 170 (Vergnügte Ruh, beliebte Seelenlust) highlights the countertenor voice; BWV (Ich arrmer Mensch) features the tenor, and the bass voice takes centre stage in BWV 82 (Ich habe genug)

This program is a perfect illustration of Bach’s capacity to create musical magic with reduced performing forces."
